What Is Rutilated Quartz?

Rutilated Quartz is also known as Rutile Quartz, Sagenite, Venus Hair Stone, Golden Hair Quartz, Red Hair Quartz and Grass Stone. It is transparent Clear to Smokey Quartz containing an array of rutile needles within. These may be red, black, brassy yellow or golden, silvery, or on rare occasions, greenish.


Rutile comes from Rutilus, the Latin word for red, as some specimens are a lovely deep red colour. Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide. Quartz is 7 on the mohs scale of hardness while Rutile is 6 – 6.5.


The main commercial uses for Rutile are the manufacture of refractory ceramic, the production of high-tech alloys and as a pigment. Finely powdered Rutile makes a brilliant white pigment and is used in paints, plastics, paper, foods, and other applications that call for a bright white colour.
